Advanced Interpersonal Communication (COM 412)

1. Give an example of the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis (linguistic determinism) implementing elaborated and/or restricted codes and describe in detail the process of linguistic determinism in either or both cases.
2. Name the five codes of Nonverbal Communication (acccording to Trenholm and Jensen). When applied, which do you feel is the most important in face to face interaction, on the telephone, and in e-mail?
3. Name and describe the four social cognition processes? Which practice do you feel is most important? Why? Describe the techniques you might use to behave effectively relative to the practice you select.
4. When self-disclosing information, what rules should we follow? When do you know it is appropriate to self-disclose information?
5. What is turn taking? When do we know its our turn to speak? Explain using principles and keys, why it is so important.
